David Horowitz was taken hostage live on-air during a KNBC-TV broadcast in August 1987. Gary Stollman, the son of KNBC’s medical reporter Max Stollman, forced Horowitz to read a statement at gunpoint during the station’s 4 p.m. newscast. The weapon, which appeared real, was later found to be an empty toy BB gun. Nobody was hurt. The experience inspired Horowitz to spearhead a successful nationwide campaign to ban realistic-looking toy guns. #news
